You need this program to access the web.The browser reads web
pages and interprets the commands they include to produce
an colourful page on your screen.
Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator are the most popular
web browsers now available.
Lets look at the address or URL you fill in the Address
or Go To: field of your browser to access a page.
For example - http://www.download.com .
Now the http:// - This http(Hypertext Transfer Protocol) prefix
tells your web browser it is looking for a page on the web.
This protocol is used to carry traffic on the web.
www - World Wide Web , the part of the internet where the site
is situated .
download - The name of the web site .
com - Shows the site belongs to a company, can also be
.co.za - company in South Africa,
.edu - educational or
.org - organisation
At the bottom left corner of your browser window, the
'status bar', you will see from time to time that it shows you
something like 'connecting to 205.194.46.59' , while seaching for the address
you've requested. This number is an "IP" address. The address of the computer
the site is situated on. It's the same as http://www.who.co.za and yes you
can type the 205.194.46.59 in the address bar , hit enter and your browser
will get the site.
A key feature of web browsers is their ability to incorporate seperate helper
applications, or plug-ins.These are needed for opening various multimedia
elements of web sites, such as audio, video clips and animations.
You browser also stores web pages that you have visited in a
folder 'Temporary Internet Files' on your hard disk. When you return
to a web page which hasn't been modified since your last visit, your
browser loads the material from the file, or cach. It's faster
than downloading the entire page again.
