- Address book

- Analogue

- The main high-speed physical network that connects other networks to and from the internet.
- Bandwidth
- A measure of the amount of data that can be transmitted in a given period of time,
defined in bps.
- Bit
- The smallest measurement of computer data, a 1 or a 0.
- Bounce
- When you send an email message to an invalid address, the message
will bounce back to you.Return to sender - address unknown.
- Browser
- Enable you to view and interact with web pages.
- Byte
- The total of 8 bits, measurement of computer data.(11001101)
- Cache
- The temporary store of files used by your browser to speed up the loading of web
pages. The content such as text, graphics or sound are stored on your computer's
hard disk and memory.
- Compression Programs
- Enable you to press several files into one smaller file (usually with a .zip suffix.
- Cookie
- Data that a web server gives to a browser the first time the user visits the site. The
server saves the information the cookie contains about the user, the browser does the
same.
- Dial-up Service
- A temporary connection to your ISP, usually through a modem.
- Digital
- A signal made up of 1's and 0's.
- DNS
- Domain Name Server - Converts an address such as www.who.com into an
IP (Internet Protocol) number such as 196.74.234.3 .
- Freeware
- Software for you to download and use, free of charge.
- Forward
- Pass a message on to another internet user.
- Flash Rom
- A Read Only Memory, that can be written to in order to upgrade its capabilities.Such as the
Flash ROM of some modems that can be upgraded to meet the V.90 standard.
- FTP
- File Transfer Protocol - A way of uploading and downloading files from the internet.
- GIF
- Graphics Interchange Format - A graphics file compression, usually used for line art
and simple graphics.
- HTTP
- HyperText Transfer Protocol - A set of standards that lets web browsers and web
servers exchange data.(Used by browsers to download pages from web servers)
- HTML
- HyperText Markup Language - The universal language in which all web pages are written.
- ISP
- Internet Service Provider - A company that provides a connection to the internet for
you.
- ISDN
- Integrated Services Digital Network - A set of standards used for digital phone lines.
(The use of digital lines instead of analogue phone lines)
- Java
- A Programming language developed by Sun Microsystems.
- JPEG
- Joint Photographic Experts Group - A graphics file compression, usually used for
photos.
- Leased line
- A permanent phone line connection between two points on the internet, usually
a company would have a permanent connection to the internet(company to ISP).
- Mail server
- Hardware and Software used by an ISP to send and receive email, also used to store
the email.
- Mailbox
- This is where your messages are saved by your ISP, until you decide to download them
into your In-box onto your computer.
- MIME
- Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions - E - mail programs use this MIME standard to encode
and decode attachments.
- Modem
- Modulator/Demodulator - Converts digital data of computers into analogue signals
to send over the telephone lines.
- Netiquette
- Proper way to behave on the internet.
- Plug-in
- A programe that extends the features of a web browser, enable it to play animations or
video clips.
- POP
- Post Office Protocol - The protocol used by email programs to retrieve messages from
the mail server.
- PoP
- Point of Presence - Areas where you can dial into to connect to the internet.
- PPP
- Point to Point Protocol - A communications protocol that lets users directly access the
internet via modem.
- Proxy Server
- A Proxy server stores the web pages you have visited, when you or someone else
whants to visit that pages again, you would download it from the proxy and not
from the web, makes things faster.
- Secure Server
- A server set up to encrypt sensitive information such as credit card details.
- Server
- A computer which provides information to other computers.
- Shareware
- Programes that you can try for free, for a limited period or with certian
features disabled, before paying a registration fee.
- SMTP
- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - A standard protocol for exchanging email on the internet.
- Spamming
- The sending of large quantities of junk email messages.
- TCP/IP
- Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol - A set of protocols that connect
all kinds of computers, from Macintoshes to PC's to Unix machines.
- URL
- Uniform Resource Locator - The name or address of a web page available over the
internet.
- VRML
- Virtual Reality Modelling Language - A programming language used to create 3D objects.
- WWW
- World Wide Web - A graphical interface for the internet.
